Search Champaign County Inmate Records

Champaign County inmate records are searched through the county jail portal, daily Sheriff reports, and records-request channels when a current roster search is not enough. A Champaign County jail roster search is strongest when the first and last name are known, but recent bookings, court-day lists, releases, transfers, and custody-status reports can supply the details needed to narrow a search. The county jail records system covers local custody at the Champaign County Jail. Sentenced state prisoners, federal inmates, and immigration detainees use separate locators after the custody path leaves the county jail.

Champaign County Jail Roster Overview

The Champaign County Sheriff's Office uses a Tyler Corrections Records Search portal for named jail records and publishes daily PDF reports for broader jail activity. The Sheriff's inmate lookup landing page says the current jail management system does not allow a general search without both first name and last name. It also says the portal includes charges and bond amounts. That makes the named portal useful for a known person and the public-document reports useful when the user is starting from a recent arrest, court list, or daily population count.

The county roster is not the same as the Illinois Department of Corrections locator. Champaign County Jail records cover local arrest, booking, pretrial, county sentencing, bond or detention status, and jail movement. IDOC records begin after a state-prison sentence or transfer. Federal BOP and ICE systems are separate from both. The safest search pattern is to start with the county portal and daily reports, then move to Circuit Clerk records, IDOC, BOP, ICE, VINELink, the jail information line, or Sheriff's FOIA depending on what the first search shows.

Use the Champaign County Roster

Begin with the Sheriff's Jail Records Portal landing page. It explains why full names matter and links to the Tyler portal. If the person was just booked, the Inmate Bookings Report may appear before a name search is easy to complete. If the person has court that day, the In-Custody Arraignment Report can show the hearing time, courtroom, cell, SO number, booking number, and case reference.

  1. Open the Sheriff's jail records landing page and follow the official link to Tyler Corrections Records Search.
  2. Search by first and last name, using spelling from the booking report if available.
  3. Open the profile and compare booking date, SO number, arresting agency, charges, and case number.
  4. If the person is missing, check the Sheriff's Public Documents page for booking, daily, arraignment, and census reports.
  5. Call Champaign County Jail at 217-384-1243 for visitation, bonds, or charge questions that need confirmation.

Champaign County Roster Search Fields

The captured Champaign County Tyler configuration identified the instance as Champaign County Sheriff and showed that charge information and mugshots are not hidden, while date of birth and address are hidden. Portal code also indicated filters for arrest dates, arresting agencies, charge disposition, and case number. The Sheriff's public instruction remains the key search rule: the current system needs both first and last name for a named search.

Use the portal together with the public reports. The portal is better for a known person, while daily PDFs are better for finding names from recent jail activity.

Champaign County Inmate Profile Fields

Profile data can include several layers tied to one booking. The Tyler API sample showed an id or booking-style number, an arrests array, charges within each arrest, case numbers, charge descriptions, degrees such as Class A Misdemeanor or felony classes, arresting agency, arrest date, age at arrest, bond fields, physical descriptors, name fields, race, SO number, last updated timestamp, release flag, and booking date. The same configuration hid DOB and address, so those should not be expected in public roster results.

Champaign County Booking Reports

Daily Sheriff's reports are the main fallback when a roster search is too narrow. The Inmate Bookings Report lists recent new bookings and includes facility node, SO number, inmate name, physical description shorthand, confined date and time, arresting agency, charges, warrant or issuing authority, bond amount/type, and an Image Yes/No field. The Daily Report gives population, custody status counts, bookings, arrests, releases, transfers, appointments, and release or transfer lists. The In-Custody Arraignment Report ties people in custody to bond court or arraignment appearances.

A daily report may be more useful than the portal for status questions. On June 8, 2026, the Daily Report listed 253 total, including Satellite Jail and Out of Facility nodes. It broke custody into labels such as Felony Pre-Trial, Felony Sentenced IDOC, Hold Other, Fugitive Hold, Remanded to DHS, and Electronic Home Detention. These labels can explain why a person remains in local custody, why a transfer may happen, or why IDOC must also be checked.

County, State, and Federal Inmates

Champaign County inmate records must be sorted by custody system. A person arrested by Champaign Police, Urbana Police, University of Illinois Police, Rantoul Police, Mahomet Police, Illinois State Police, or the Sheriff's Office can still be booked into the county jail for a state-law offense. A person sentenced to IDOC moves into a statewide prison system. A federal or immigration case can require the BOP locator, ICE ODLS, federal court records, counsel, or a direct jail call if USMS appears in the local record.

Champaign County Jail Facility

The public facility map resolves one county detention facility for the site: Champaign County Jail. Older planning records discuss the former downtown jail and Satellite Jail history, but current inmate lookup, inmate resources, bond payment, and jail contact pages route public jail business to the Lierman Avenue jail. The Sheriff's contact page describes the jail phone as the contact for inmate visitation, bonds, and charges.

Booking Process in Champaign County

The Sheriff's 2025 annual report says state-offense arrestees in Champaign County come to the Champaign County Jail, except for federal crimes. Booking creates the jail record. The booking report then may show confinement time, SO number, description, arresting agency, charges, warrant or issuing authority, bond amount/type, and image flag. The Corrections Division also transports inmates to court hearings and medical appointments and supervises sentenced people through Electronic Home Detention.

Bond language should be read through Illinois pretrial rules. The annual report explains that, with few exceptions, Illinois no longer has money bond. If the State's Attorney does not seek detention, the person is released with pretrial conditions. If detention is sought, a judge holds a detention hearing. Local jail pages still publish payment instructions for cases where bond or payment applies, so the correct practical step is to call 217-384-1243 or 217-384-1240 before traveling or paying online.

Other funding methods are linked through Access Corrections. Request Champaign County Jail Records

If the roster and public reports do not show the needed record, use the Sheriff's FOIA process for Sheriff's Office records. The Sheriff's contact page links the Sheriff's Office-only FOIA form. It can be submitted by email attachment to SheriffFOIA@co.champaign.il.us, by mail to Champaign County Sheriff's Office at 204 E. Main Street, Urbana, IL 61801, by fax to 217-384-1219, or through the pickup route listed on the form. The current contact page names Lieutenant Brad Wakefield as the Sheriff's FOIA Officer.

The Sheriff's form asks for details that help locate the record: case number if known, record requested, filing date, occurrence address, whether an arrest was made, the arrested person's name, victim name if applicable, commercial-purpose status, contact phone, and preferred delivery method. Court files should be requested through the Circuit Clerk, not Sheriff's FOIA. Police reports are also not part of the court file, so they should be requested from the law-enforcement agency that created them.
